RGP-40 Drum Grenade Launcher

In the last decade, the Czech Republic came up with the idea to develop its own drum-type grenade launcher. In the South African Milkor MGR weapon, a rotating drum magazine was seen holding up to six 40mm grenades.

The Milkor MGR parameters speak for themselves. The original version and its derivatives can fire up to three 40mm grenades every second. If we consider that the lethal range of a 40 mm grenade has a radius of 5 meters, then in one two-second firing, the Milkor MGL can destroy up to 1,000 square meters. Do you know any other such weapon with more firepower?

It is not surprising that the Czechs were inspired by South African weapons to develop their own grenade launcher. The development of the RGP-40 grenade launcher began in 2007 in collaboration with the Military Technical University (MUT) and the Center for Research and Development of Mechanical Systems (OBRSM). The task was to develop a weapon using a magazine with a rotating drum for a 40 mm 46SR NATO cartridge.

The first model, a technology demonstrator, appeared in September 2008, and the first picture was taken a month later. The tests were successful and confirmed the correctness of the design solution.

A year later, two prototypes of the RGP-40 grenade launcher were released. Compared to the first models, they have a lower weight of 6.5 kg due to the wider use of aluminum parts. The internal trigger mechanism has also been improved, and all sharp edges and transitions have been removed.

An interesting solution is an angle—adjustable bed. This allows the shooter to adjust the angles to the axis of the weapon. The problem is not even shooting from the ground in a bulletproof vest, when the shooter has to look at the weapon from an angle. The position of the box is fixed by a large plastic fuse.

Finally, in June 2010, two serial RGP-40 grenade launchers were launched. The visual differences from the prototypes are minimal. The biggest difference is the use of titanium in the design, which led to a further reduction in the weight of the weapon to 6.1 kg. For comparison, the most modern American version of the Milkor MGL, called MGL-140, weighs 5.9 kg.

The 40 mm 46SR NATO grenades used have a muzzle velocity of 76 to 82 m/s, which allows you to shoot at targets at a distance of up to 400 meters. However, grenades of the same caliber are also under development, which at an initial projectile velocity of 125 m / will be able to hit targets at a distance of up to 800 meters.
